Cambodia’s gaming regulator has embarked on a study visit to Australia, meeting this week with the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC).
In a social media post, the VGCCC said it welcomed representatives from the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC) to Victoria, providing an opportunity to “share insights on casino regulation, compliance and enforcement, risk-based approaches, responsible gambling initiatives and Victoria’s Public Lotteries license framework.”
It added, “Through open dialogue and knowledge exchange, both organizations explored opportunities to strengthen regulatory capability and support the development of effective, evidence-based gambling regulation.”
The VGCCC explained that it values such opportunities to engage with international counterparts and strengthen relationships that support knowledge exchange, continuous improvement and effective regulation.
The VGCCC was established in January 2022, replacing the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) as Victoria’s standalone gambling regulator in response to the findings of the 2021 Royal Commission into Crown Melbourne.
Cambodia’s CGMC has recently outlined its intention to strengthen oversight of the casino sector amid international pressure and reported links between some licensed casino sites and online scams.
This follows passage in 2020 of the Law on the Management of Integrated Resorts and Commercial Gambling (LMCG) which established a formal licensing and regulatory frameworkfor the sector. The CGMC has been phasing in new regulations in the years since.
