In the nearly 100 years of World Championship history, over a thousand matches have been played, but only a handful regularly feature on lists of the greatest games ever. What is the secret behind those rare clashes that become legendary and are rewatched for decades? It’s not just down to the teams’ skill. Legend is born from a combination of several factors: high stakes, drama, atmosphere and the emotions of millions of fans.

High stakes: when a mistake costs everything
Knockout stage matches are more memorable than group stage fixtures, and the reason is simple – it’s a “win or go home” format. Every mistake here is irreversible and the psychological pressure on players and coaches increases tremendously: there will be no second chance. That’s why finals and knockout clashes produce the most dramatic moments.

Notable examples: the 1950 decisive match between Brazil and Uruguay, which went down in history as the “Maracanaço”; the 1966 final between England and West Germany, which still sparks debate over refereeing decisions; and the 2022 final between Argentina and France, which became one of the most tense encounters in World Championship history.

When 90 minutes aren’t enough
Extra time and a penalty shoot-out are another source of tension. When regular time fails to produce a winner, the pressure only mounts: the players’ fatigue, the risk of cramps and the psychological strain of the penalty shoot-out turn the final into a real spectacle teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

It’s penalty shoot-outs that most often provide the climax to the most talked-about battles – spectators remember the failures of the greats even decades later. Just think of Roberto Baggio’s miss in the 1994 final!

The comeback factor
Comebacks are one of the defining features of iconic matches. The 2022 final between Argentina and France is remembered not for the victory itself, but for the way the Argentines, despite leading, repeatedly lost their advantage. The 1970 semi-final between Italy and West Germany, dubbed the “Game of the Century,” became a classic precisely because of the goal fest and the back-and-forth lead changes in extra time. And how can we forget the “Miracle of Bern” – the 1954 final, in which the invincible Hungary failed to hold on to a two-goal lead and lost 3-2 to West Germany?

An unpredictable scenario is far more memorable than a convincing victory: fans appreciate not only the result, but also the emotional rollercoaster. The 2026 tournament was no exception, delivering plenty of matches with dramatic twists and turns. Belgium’s comeback against Senegal and Argentina’s against Egypt will be remembered for a long time, and not just in those countries.

The fans create the memory
A legendary match would be impossible without the atmosphere created by the stands. According to various estimates, the 1950 “Maracanaço” drew a crowd of around 200,000 spectators – a figure that has become part of the legend. The combination of packed stands, global attention and emotions that cannot be measured by statistics is what makes such games part of football history.

Modern competitions continue this tradition on a new scale: the 2026 World Championship set a new attendance record – over 6.8 million spectators across the tournament, which is almost double the previous record. The final at MetLife Stadium drew a crowd of over 80,000 fans.

Conclusion
For a World Championship match to become legendary, several factors must come together: high stakes, an attempt at a comeback, the atmosphere in the stands and brilliant performances from star players. Every new tournament, including the 2026 forum, adds new chapters to this chronicle, and so new football classics continue to be born in front of our eyes.
