Leading sportsbook solution supplier DATA.BET has released an analysis of betting activity during the world’s biggest event, the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The global sporting event became one of the most-attended football tournaments in history, drawing a combined 6.8 million attendees across 104 matches in the three host nations – the United States, Canada and Mexico.
According to information compiled by DATA.BET, pre-match betting accounted for 63% of turnover overall with live markets holding a 37% share throughout – a split that remained consistent over the six weeks, regardless of stage or opponent.
Stat-based markets accounted for over 11% of total turnover, highlighting their importance alongside traditional betting options. Corners Total emerged as the event’s most popular statistical market, ranking 10th overall by stake despite the dominance of core markets such as 1×2 and Totals.
Bettors also built increasingly detailed combinations through DATA.BET’s Bet Builder, regularly pairing Corners, Yellow Cards and Team Totals with Anytime Goalscorer – a market sustained by consistent finishing from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
At the team level, France generated the highest stake, ahead of Spain, Argentina, England and Belgium – together, the top five teams accounted for 36.5% of the total stake, highlighting their strong popularity and betting appeal throughout the event.
Some of the tournament’s sharpest shifts in betting activity came from outside the traditional contenders. Cape Verde produced the group stage’s biggest surprise, while Egypt – led by Mohamed Salah – pushed Argentina to the limit in the Round of 16, a run that captured global attention and drove a clear rise in betting interest as it continued.
“The scale wasn’t just visible on the pitch – it showed in our numbers too. The combined betting turnover of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the [CS2 esports event] Intel Extreme Masters Cologne Major 2026 was split 58.5% to 41.5% in favor of the World Cup,” said DATA.BET’s Head of Sports, Yevhenii Ilchenko. DATA.BET is renowned as a leader in the esports betting field.
Betting activity intensified as the World Cup progressed. Although the group stage featured significantly more matches and generated over 33% more bets than the play-off stage, it delivered almost identical turnover and attracted virtually the same number of unique bettors as the knockout stage – a sign that fewer, higher-stakes matches carried just as much weight as a full round of group games.
That shift also showed up at the individual bet level: the average stake during the play-off stage was 28% higher than during the group stage. That momentum built steadily toward the closing rounds, with the semi-finals and final generating the highest turnover of any stage in the competition.
“What made this World Cup stand out wasn’t one number – it was how consistently engaged bettors stayed for six straight weeks, till the final,” Ilchenko, said.
