Sands China Ltd has continued its annual tradition of supporting higher education in Macau with a MOP$970,000 donation to six Macau tertiary institutions for scholarships and fellowships.
Sands China reiterated its support of local students at a cheque presentation ceremony at its company offices on Monday where it acknowledged the importance of higher education in nurturing Macau’s talent.
Dr Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd, said: “As a company, Sands China remains committed to the importance of investing in talent development – not only for our own team members, but for Macau as a whole. We are pleased to be able to work together with higher education institutions to nurture talent in Macau, as we help raise up people who will contribute to our city’s development and diversification as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”
Antonio Ramirez, Sands China senior vice president of human resources, added: “It is with great pleasure that Sands China supports Macau’s students as they work toward their goals of achieving higher education degrees. The students we support today will become tomorrow’s local leaders, and we believe in the importance of investing in the growth and development of Macau’s local talent. With today’s donation, our company’s total contribution toward scholarships and fellowships since 2006 now stands at MOP 8.43 million, benefitting over 1,000 students to date.”
The scholarship and fellowship cheques were given to Dr. Joey Lao Chi Ngai, director of the Rector’s Office of the University of Macau; Denys Kwong Ying Wa, associate vice president, and Remus Wong Ka Weng, head of the Student Affairs Office, from the Macau University of Science and Technology; Hester Cheang Mio Han, secretary general of the Macao Polytechnic Institute; Antonio Chu Chan Weng, head of the Technical and Academic Support Division of the Institute for Tourism Studies; Prof. Maria Antonia Espadinha, vice-rector, and Teresa Loong, director of the Office for Student Affairs, from the University of Saint Joseph; and Dr. Oscar Chan, director of the Macau Institute of Management.
The cheques will be distributed among 97 students in support of their studies for the current academic year. The beneficiary students were chosen based on their academic performance and financial status during the previous academic year.
