Wakayama prefecture has announced the establishment of a committee of experts tasked with attracting an IR to Wakayama’s Marina City.

According to local media reports, the committee is made up of eight members and is chaired by Haruo Shimada, an economist and president of Tokyo Metropolitan University. It also includes Shosuke Mori, counselor of the Kansai Economic Federation, and Hidetaka Saeki, who is an honorary fellow at Kyoto University Graduate School of Public Policy and has authored a book on casinos. The first meeting is expected to be held in the summer.

Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka stated, “We have selected a committee with a background of various specialist fields that represent Japan. The committee chose the representative of the Japan in each field of specialization.”

Meanwhile, French operator Groupe Barrière also opened its new office in Wakayama on Tuesday.

“We want to build a resort that utilizes the tourist resources such as Mt Koya and the Kumano Kodo,” said the company’s casino developer, Jonathan Strock.
