Philippines business tycoon Lance Gokongwei has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of online gaming platform provider PhilWeb Corp, just over a month after he first joined as a director.
The company revealed via a Friday filing that Gokongwei has replaced Crisanto Roy B. Alcid in the role, with Alcid having relinquished his positions as Chairman and CEO effective 27 August 2026. He will continue to serve as a director of the company.
Gokongwei will serve as Chairman for the remainder of the current term.
The latest move follows Gokongwei earlier this year pledging a Php2 billion (US$32.6 million) investment into PhilWeb – seemingly in recognition of the explosive growth it has experienced since expanding further into the Philippines’ online gaming market as a Gaming System Administrator.
PhilWeb said in an announcement that the transition of leadership completes its institutional governance restructuring and signals a definitive shift from cross-border capital formation to the aggressive, large-scale execution of the company’s commercial B2B AI-enabled technology roadmap.
“This transition marks a critical inflection point for our capitalization and operational scale,” said Gokongwei. “Our objective is clear: to deploy institutional-grade, AI-powered infrastructure that establishes a new operational standard for security and compliance across the regulated digital ecosystem.”
PhilWeb added that its immediate operational mandate focuses on the integration of high-value backend capabilities such as Real-Time Operational Monitoring, Algorithmic Risk Management, Regulatory Compliance Automation, Anti-Fraud Detection and Data-Driven Customer Lifecycle Optimization.
“Having Lance Gokongwei step into the Chairman role provides the institutional governance required for our next phase of scale,” said PhilWeb President Brian Ng.
“His strategic oversight ensures that our AI infrastructure rollout – specifically engineered to serve the complex backend needs of premium commercial tourism complexes and multinational platform providers – is executed with absolute capital market discipline.”
PhilWeb’s transition to a technology-based platform provider saw it recently ink deals to support the online gaming arms of Hann Casino Resort, Okada Manila, NUSTAR and Newport World Resorts. It has also entered into a strategic service agreement with FBM Philippines supporting its network of gaming machines and venues.
Gokongwei is the President, CEO and Executive Director of Philippines conglomerate JG Summit Holdings, whose business arms include food and beverage giant Universal Robina Corporation, real estate developer Robinsons Land Corporation and local airline Cebu Air.
The group’s leisure arm, Universal Hotels and Resorts Inc, counts NUSTAR Resort Cebu among its core assets.
