Macau is about to welcome the seven-day National Day Golden Week holidays, and Macau authorities are projecting that border checkpoints across Macau will handle 5.2 million to 5.4 million passenger movements, with a daily average of 740,000 to 770,000 border crossings.
This year, mainland China’s National Day Golden Week runs for seven days, from 1 October to 7 October. Macau authorities held a joint press conference on Tuesday to outline response measures for the Week.
The Public Security Police Force stated that a comprehensive police contingency plan has been drawn up. Targeted traffic controls and crowd control measures will be deployed at popular tourist spots and various border checkpoints. Peak traffic is expected on 3 and 4 October, with single-day border crossings potentially exceeding 800,000.
Meanwhile, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) highlighted that it will utilize multiple channels for promotion, strengthen communication with the industry, conduct interdepartmental inspections and maintain close contact with mainland tourism authorities to ensure the quality of tourism services in Macau.
The large influx of visitors is also expected to place increased pressure on transportation. The Transport Bureau stated that meetings have been held under the interdepartmental coordination mechanism to fully deploy public transit dispatching, border facility support, information dissemination and emergency response plans. Reserved casino shuttle bus pickup and drop-off areas and expanded queuing spaces will be set up at various checkpoints.
Regarding visitor arrivals, MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes stated during an interview last week that visitor arrivals were strong during the first two days of the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. She expects favorable visitor numbers during the National Day Golden Week as well, forecasting a daily average of 120,000 visitor arrivals.
