A high-level event bringing together representatives from the FBI and INTERPOL alongside government and law enforcement officials from China and other Asian nations has kicked off in Cambodia with the goal of strengthening cooperation against online scams.
According to The Phnom Penh Post, the International Conference on Combating Online Scams is taking place at the Sofitel Phnom Penh on 23 and 24 September, with the theme “Acting Together towards Breaking the Chain and Eradication of Online Scams.”
Aimed at strengthening joint action against such activities by exchanging knowledge and experience, attendees include government officials, law enforcement agencies, international organisations, financial institutions, technology companies and other stakeholders, the media outlet explained.
In a message to delegates, Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet said, “Online scams are a complex transnational challenge that no country can tackle alone. By working together, sharing knowledge and enhancing our partnerships, we can break the chain of online scams, eradicate criminal networks, protect our citizens and build a safer and more secure digital environment for all.
“With this spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility, the conference aims to deepen our understanding of the evolving online scam ecosystem; strengthen international cooperation, coordination and multi-stakeholder partnerships; and promote the exchange of experiences and best practices.
“Through our collective commitment and partnership, we can overcome even the greatest challenge.”
The conference comes with Cambodia having declared the eradication of scam hubs a national priority amid international concern over their proliferation across the country – in many cases linked to companies that had been issued casino licenses.
Cambodia’s gaming regulator recently revealed it is preparing a new “casino integrity and quality evaluation framework for license renewals,” aiming to “determine the minimum suitability conditions for obtaining a casino license.”
Local authorities have also announced in recent weeks that they have eliminated all major scam compounds in the country.
