MGM Osaka and the prefecture’s government have both issued warnings about fake websites or advertisements falsely representing MGM Osaka and redirecting citizens to online casinos.
A notice from early June on MGM Osaka’s official website indicates in Japanese that the websites “are using the name of MGM Osaka Corporation without authorization.” The group emphasized that “these sites are not affiliated with our company in any way and are not operated or managed by us.”
The gaming and hospitality operator further stated that the “fake sites may be online casino sites,” warning users to “exercise extreme caution and do not enter or register any personal information or credit card information.”
MGM Osaka also warned that “it is illegal to connect to online casinos, gamble or advertise or promote them” in Japan.
The Osaka Prefectural Government added that “advertising and promoting online casinos is also illegal.”
The US$10 billion MGM Osaka casino resort is expected to open in 2030 and has drawn significant attention from illicit groups aiming to profit off its brand recognition.
MGM Osaka also published a warning regarding “individuals impersonating MGM Osaka officers and employees, engaging in fraudulent sales activities and making unreasonable demands for money through social media and other channels.”
Similar to the warnings about the fake websites, MGM Osaka assured that “neither our company nor our officers and employees ever solicit business outsourcing or demand money through social media or other channels.”
The Osaka Prefectural Government confirmed advertisements on Facebook by a group called “Osaka Prefecture/Small and Medium Enterprise Capital Investment Grant.” The government body highlighted that “this was not the official account of the Osaka Prefecture,” indicating that it had lodged a report and confirmed that the account “disappeared” on 15 June.
