Grand Korea Leisure (GKL) saw a significant 40.8% year-on-year uptick in casino sales in May, hitting KRW43.14 billion (US$28.1 million).

The Korean foreigner-only casino operator also saw sales rise by 7.3% month-on-month from a strong April figure of KRW40.2 billion (US$27.6 million).

Table games sales continued to lead the pack, with a 43.3% year-on-year rise to KRW38.84 billion (US$25.31 million), up by 4.9% month-on-month. Machine sales rose by 21.5% year-on-year to KRW4.3 billion (US$2.81 million), up 35.5% compared to a slower April.

Table drop in May increased by 16% year-on-year and 9.8% month-on-month, reaching KRW379.53 billion (US$248.1 million).

For the first five months of the year, GKL casino sales increased by 8.5% to KRW189.97 billion (US$124.2 million), with table games providing the most momentum – contributing KRW172.14 billion (US$112.5 million), a 7.7% year-on-year rise. Machine sales were up 17% year-on-year during the five-month period, totaling KRW17.83 billion (US$11.66 million).

GKL is a partially government-owned, publicly traded company of which a majority 51% stake is held by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) – a state-owned entity under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The remaining 49% is held by public investors, including institutional and retail shareholders.

The company operates three casinos in South Korea in Seoul and Busan under the Seven Luck brand.
