Crown Perth has continued its revitalization with the launch of a new speakeasy bar called 1520.
Hidden with the recently opened Urban Food District – an expansive food, drink and social space – 1520 pays homage to New York’s 1520 Sedgwick Avenue – the apartment building widely recognized as the birthplace of hip hop.
Described as an intimate late‑night bar, it features worn leather chairs, slightly wrinkled menus and a soundtrack driven by hip hop “in its purest form,” according to Crown, with a turntable DJ spinning classic tracks.
The menu features cocktails that aim to follow the same philosophy, boasting hip hop inspired names such as “Beets By Dre”, “Notoriously Juicy”, “Back to School Jam”, “Henny’d Up”, “Rum DMC” and “Shake It Like A Polaroid Picture”.
“1520 is for those who appreciate hip hop as culture and for anyone drawn to hidden rooms, secret bars and venues that feel discovered rather than advertised,” Crown said.
Crown first announced the Urban Food District development last year in what it described as the biggest investment in the 40-year-old property in almost a decade. Opened in mid-February, the development offers a variety of international cuisines plus three bars and an outdoor beer garden.
Urban Food District’s restaurants include Burgers by ES, New York-style pizza outlet Side Piece Pizza, Japanese premium hand-rolled sushi and sake bar Tekka Bar, Vietnamese eatery Saigon Story, Mexican street offering Taco Daddy and Malaysian offering Jom Kopitiam.
