Kangwon Land, the only casino in South Korea at which locals are permitted to gamble, has unveiled a series of energy saving measures in response to uncertainty in energy supply and demand caused by “instability in the Middle East.”
The “Kangwon Land-style High-Intensity Energy Saving Measures” came into effect on Thursday, with Acting CEO Nam Han-gyu and senior staff conducting guidance and promotional campaigns regarding certain initiatives that will be implemented under the plan.
According to information from the company, the energy saving measures encompass various strategies tailored to Kangwon Land’s specific characteristics, including restrictions on employee vehicle operation, flexible work schedules, optimization of facility operations, energy conservation in daily life and budget reduction management.
Energy consumption will be reduced through vehicle restrictions, with employees subject to a five-day vehicle restriction system while customers using public transportation will be offered beverage discounts at food and beverage outlets within the resort.
The resort is also looking to reduce heating and electricity usage by actively encouraging the use of flexible work arrangements for administrative and sales support staff to disperse peak energy consumption times, while simultaneously improving operational efficiency through the optimization of facility management, such as consolidating accommodation facilities and adjusting resort lighting.
Within the employee facilities, daily energy conservation is emphasized with employees encouraged to limit elevator usage, apply power-saving modes to monitors when away from their desks and maintain appropriate temperatures in office spaces.
Budget reduction and management will also be systematically pursued. Kangwon Land said monthly water and heating costs will be intensively monitored and their causes analyzed, and energy-saving measures incorporated from the planning stage of investment projects to maximize efficiency.
“In this grave situation where energy supply instability could be prolonged, I hope that Kangwon Land’s own energy conservation efforts will serve as an example to the local community and visitors,” said Nam. “We will actively participate in the government’s efforts to overcome the energy crisis and strive to overcome this national crisis by having all employees and customers voluntarily engage in energy saving activities.”
