Korea’s Kangwon Land Inc reported Thursday a serious industrial accident that had resulted in the death of an employee.
The company stated in a filing that the employee had collapsed during work and was taken to hospital but later passed away. No cause of death has yet been determined with the Ministry of Employment and Labor to conduct an onsite investigation.
The tragedy comes just days after Kangwon Land, the only casino in South Korea at which locals are permitted to gamble, officially launched what it described as the largest guest room renovation in its history – part of a KRW200 billion (US$136 million) investment into its hotel and casino facilities.
The renovation will cover one building of the Grand Hotel’s main tower, comprising 477 rooms, and five buildings of the Mountain Condo, comprising another 280 rooms.
Kangwon Land will also build a new floor dedicated to the casino and introduce a lounge exclusively for casino members on the uppermost 24th floor.
The project, part of the resort’s broader US$1.9 billion expansion, is due for completion in 1H28.
