Kangwon Land, the only casino in South Korea at which locals are permitted to gamble, has officially launched what it describes as the largest guest room renovation in its history – part of a KRW200 billion (US$136 million) investment into its hotel and casino facilities.
The company announced this week that it had begun construction on the so-called “K-HIT” project, which is central to its efforts to become a globally-recognized integrated resort.
The renovation will cover one building of the Grand Hotel’s main tower, comprising 477 rooms, and five buildings of the Mountain Condo, comprising another 280 rooms.
Kangwon Land said the revamp will go beyond simple facility renovations and focus on upgrading the hotel to a level of quality befitting global standards. As such, the Grand Hotel will significantly expand the size of its family rooms, build a new floor dedicated to the casino and introduce a lounge exclusively for casino members on the uppermost 24th floor.
Expected to be complete in 1H28, the project is “expected to create synergy and maximize customer satisfaction by providing casino guests with a superior accommodation environment and differentiated VIP service,” the company explained.
Mountain Condo will also renovate its aging guestroom interiors and replace its exterior walls with non-combustible materials, ensuring customer safety through fire prevention, Kangwon Land said.
“This environmental improvement project marks the full realization of the K-HIT project, which aims to transform Kangwon Land into a global resort complex,” said Lee Min-ho, Acting Head of Tourism Marketing at Kangwon Land.
“As this is the largest investment since our founding, we will dedicate ourselves to securing unparalleled facility competitiveness and attracting both domestic and international tourists.”
Kangwon Land has previously outlined plans to invest a total of KRW3 trillion (US$1.9 billion) into transforming the wider resort area, including expanding its non-gaming facilities by revamping walking trails around the casino complex, building a wellness center and developing a luxury pool villa, among other amenities.
It has outlined a goal of doubling the ratio of non-gaming revenue generated at the casino-resort annually from 20% to 40% by providing greater incentive to increase length of stay.
