The first two days of this year’s Chinese New Year Golden Week saw 217,951 visitors enter Macau, according to information from the Public Security Police Force.
The Chinese New Year holiday in mainland China began on Sunday 15 February and lasts for nine days, ending on 23 February. Macau’s border checkpoints experienced significant traffic peaks during the early days of the holiday period.
Police data shows that, on Sunday, recorded a total of 637,450 border crossings, with 264,441 of them being travelers. Among these, 132,013 were inbound visitors.
On Monday 16 – the official Chinese New Year’s Eve – the number of travelers slightly declined with Macau’s total border crossings for the day reaching 458,394 and 85,938 being inbound visitors.
The drop in visitor numbers on Chinese New Year’s Eve is attributed to the traditional practice of families reuniting at home for the holiday, with fewer people traveling on this day. It is expected that visitor numbers will continue to decrease on Tuesday which is New Year’s Day but will begin to climb again starting from the second day of the New Year on Wednesday 18 February.
