Hong Kong-listed Emperor Entertainment Hotel Limited has announced a deal to sell 78 gold bricks embedded in the lobby floor of its Macau hotel and former satellite casino venue Grand Emperor. The sale price is HK$99.7 million (US$12.8 million) with an estimated profit of approximately HK$90.2 million (US$11.5 million).
In its announcement, Emperor stated, “Following the cessation of its gaming operation, the Group has been actively planning for other entertainment and amusement facilities to enhance its overall hospitality experience and broaden the revenue base.
“Given that the relevant area is planned to undergo renovation and redevelopment, the Precious Metal that were originally part of the hotel’s interior design and outfits are no longer relevant to the theme of the hotel in the future.
“In light of the prevailing market conditions and the market price of the Precious Metal currently at a high level, the Directors are of the view that the Disposal represents a good opportunity for the Group to realise and unlock the value of the Precious Metal whilst enabling the Group to save security and insurance expenses associated with the Precious Metal in the future.

“The net proceeds will strengthen the Group’s financial position and enable it to invest should suitable investment opportunities arise.”
The “Golden Avenue” at Grand Emperor is an iconic location within the hotel. The floor is paved with 78 Swiss 999.9 fine gold bricks weighing a total of 78 kilograms.
Emperor Entertainment stated that the original purpose was to create a luxurious and magnificent atmosphere within the casino to enhance the brand image.
“The Group had covered the major passageway area of the floor of the hotel lobby with the Precious Metal which were a number of gold bricks for over two decades and had attracted high foot traffic,” it said.
Grand Emperor officially ceased operations ahead of schedule on Thursday 30 October 2025. In last year’s performance report, the company stated, “As the gaming operations at Grand Emperor would cease … the Group is actively planning other entertainment and leisure facilities to enhance the guest experience and diversify revenue streams.”
