Chinese state media has reported the execution of 11 people linked with scam centers in Myanmar, including the operation of casinos.
According to the media reports, which were picked up by Bloomberg, the 11 executed were all members of the Ming family criminal gang” who had been found guilty of intentional homicide, fraud and running casinos, as per state broadcaster China Central Television.
In a media briefing on Thursday, Guo Jiakun – spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry – said China was actively working with Southeast Asian nations like Myanmar to crack down on scam networks.
“These joint efforts to root out the ‘scourges’ of online gambling and telecom fraud have achieved significant results in safeguarding the lives and property of the people,” he said.
Bloomberg noted that the Ming family’s online and telecommunications fraud operations involved more than RMB10 billion (US$1.4 billion) in funds with their activities said to have resulted in the death of 14 Chinese citizens and injuries to many others. It said that the executions were approved by the Supreme Court, having been sentenced in September.
The Ming family had been among those to convert the town of Laukkaing into an area of casinos and red-light districts before being detained and handed over to Chinese authorities in 2023 after ethnic militia took over the town.
