The Macau government has unveiled a new light rail proposal, planning to add six new lines traversing the Macau Peninsula, including a station near MGM Macau.

The Macau Public Works Bureau (DSOP) released the “Macau Light Rail Development Strategy Study” on Friday, initiating a public consultation period lasting over a month. The study indicates the government plans to add three new lines on the Macau Peninsula: an extension of the currently under-construction “East Line,” a West Line and a South Line.

A map of how Macau’s full light rail system will look once complete

The East Line extension will connect the Qingmao Port and the Border Gate, passing through the “Citizens’ Park Station” near the Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome. This approximately 1.5-kilometer line will run underground.

The West Line, approximately 3.7 kilometers long, will be located on the western side of the Macau Peninsula. It will connect the Qingmao Port with the A-Ma Temple Station, passing through four stations, including the “Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro Station” near Ponte 16. This line will also be fully underground.

The South Line, located on the southern side of the Macau Peninsula, will be 7.7 kilometers long. It will pass through multiple cultural landmarks and tourist attractions, including the “Avenida 24 de Junho Station” adjacent to Avenida 24 de Junho Macau – an area housing Wynn Macau, MGM Macau, L’Arc and StarWorld. This line will also be fully underground.

According to the project overview, the West Line and South Line, combined with the currently under-construction East Line, will form a light rail network encircling the Macau Peninsula, significantly alleviating traffic congestion on the peninsula. Furthermore, the new lines will primarily operate underground, ensuring the light rail system can continue safe operations during extreme weather events such as typhoons and heavy rains.

The other three new lines are the Seac Pai Van Line Extension, Taipa North Line and Taipa Central Line. The Seac Pai Van Line Extension extends from the existing Seac Pai Van Line, while the Taipa North and Central Lines primarily serve Taipa’s new reclaimed areas and are classified as long-term projects.

The Macau Light Rail system currently consists of three main lines: the Taipa Line, Hengqin Line and Seac Pai Van Line. The Taipa Line was the first to open in December 2019 and was extended to A-Ma Temple Station in 2023, becoming Macau’s only light rail line connecting the Macau Peninsula and Taipa.

The Macau government is currently constructing the East Line, another light rail route connecting the Macau Peninsula and Taipa. Upon completion, it will link the Border Gate with the Taipa Line.
