Macau’s gaming industry recorded a surplus of MOP$143.1 billion (US$17.9 billion) in 2024, representing a 24.7% year-on-year increase according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). The surplus was driven by an increase in total receipts of the sector including receipts from gaming and other activities.

With both receipts and expenditure on the rise, DSEC said that total receipts of the sector grew by 23.1% year-on-year to MOP$231.5 billion (US$28.9 billion) while total expenditure of the sector excluding taxes was up 18.0% to MOP$94.4 billion (US$11.8 billion).

Operating Expenses of MOP$40.6 billion (US$5.1 billion) and Purchase of Goods, Commissions & Customer Rebates of MOP$23.2 billion (US$2.9 billion) both grew by 28.0% year-on-year, while Compensation of Employees was 7.0% higher at MOP$21.5 billion (US$2.7 billion). However, Non-operating Expenses including interest and depreciation dropped by 9.6% year-on-year to MOP$9.10 billion (US$1.14 billion).

Among the Operating Expenses, expenditure on complimentary goods and services provided to customers such as hotel accommodation and food and beverages rose by 31.1% to MOP$25.6 billion (US$3.20 billion), management services and contractual services by 29.4% to MOP$6.99 billion (US$873 million) and market research and publicity by 28.0% to MOP$2.67 billion (US$333 million).

Gross Surplus of the sector before taxes stood at MOP$143.12 billion, up by 24.7% year-on-year.

DSEC’s Gaming Sector Survey collected data on gaming activities from nine enterprises operating gaming activities in 2024, of which it said one ceased gaming activities during the reference year. At end-2024, there were therefore six gaming concessionaires and two enterprises engaged in lotteries. Data on hotel, retail and other businesses operated within the enterprises are not included.
