The Macau SAR Government has released the results of its 2022 Gaming Survey, which shows that total receipts of the gaming industry fell to MOP$46.2 billion (US$5.72 billion), down 49.2% year-on-year. Expenditure fell by 24.7% to MOP$40.31 billion (US$4.99 billion).
The survey incorporates all nine gaming-related concessions in Macau, including its six licensed casino operators plus Macau Jockey Club, Wing Hing Lottery Company Limited and sports betting concession Macau Slot.
Of the MOP$46.20 billion in receipts received in 2022, MOP$42.12 (US$5.22 billion) came via games of fortune. Expenditure included operating expenses of MOP$9.42 billion (US$1.17 billion), of which expenses on goods and services such as hotel rooms and food and beverage provided free of charge to customers amounted to MOP$4.20 billion (US$520 million). Expenses on management and third-party services amounted to MOP1.61 billion (US$199 million), while purchases, commissions and customer rebates amounted to MOP$3.73 billion (US$462 million). Staff costs were MOP$18.81 billion (US$2.33 billion), down by 7.2% year-on-year.
In addition, interest expense of MOP$5.44 billion (US$674 million) was up by 22.0% year-on-year, driving non-operating expenses MOP$8.36 billion (US$1.04 billion).
Reflecting the industry’s contribution to the economy, gross value added decreased by 51.6% year-on-year to MOP$30.37 billion (US$3.76 billion). Profit before taxation, including special tax on gaming, fell by 72.8% to MOP$11.56 billion (US$1.43 billion), with the profitability ratio at 26.6% and the profit-to-expenditure ratio at 36.2%, also recording decreases of 21.5 and 56.4 percentage points respectively.
The Statistics and Census Service publishes its annual survey on the gaming sector based on statistical data collected from enterprises involved in gaming activities. It excludes information on hotel and retail businesses operated by the enterprises concerned.
