Macau recorded gross gaming revenue of MOP$8.4 billion (US$1.05 billion) in April, representing a 1.1% increase compared with the March 2021 GGR of MOP$8.3 billion, according to figures published by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) today (1 May).

Although GGR was still down 64.4% versus Macau’s pre-pandemic GGR of MOP$23.6 billion in April 2019, it represents the highest monthly GGR tally since Jan 2020, the most significant indication yet since the start of the pandemic that recovery is well and truly underway.

For the first four months of 2021 combined, Macau’s GGR stands at MOP$32.0 billion (US$4.0 billion), up 2.6% year-on-year.

The SAR’s rising GGR comes after the Macao Government Tourism Office recently revealed the highest single daily tally of visitor arrivals into Macau in 15 months with 34,252 on Friday 16 April.

That figure was higher than the previous post-pandemic daily record of 32,647 arrivals on Friday 26 March and highlighted an upward trend for the SAR, including a total of 191,828 visitor arrivals in the week from 9 to 15 April 2021 at an average of 27,404 per day. This was 111.7% higher than the daily average of 12,947 during the recent Spring Festival Golden Week.
