The number of guests staying in Macau’s hotels and guesthouses rose 7.2% in 2018 to 14,107,000, according to information released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The increase was driven by a 12.5% rise in guests from mainland China to 9,717,000, which helped overcome slight declines in guests from South Korea (484,000), Hong Kong (1,515,000) and Taiwan (477,000).

The average occupancy of the SAR’s hotels and guesthouses was also up by 3.9 percentage points to 91.1%, including a 92.4% occupancy rate in 5-star rooms.

December’s results saw a 4.8% year-on-year increase in hotel guests to 1,263,000 of which 863,000 came from mainland China, up 8.2%.

There were a total of 116 hotels and guesthouses operating at the end of December, an increase of five year-on-year. The number of guest rooms grew by 5.8% year-on-year to 39,000, with 25,000 5-star hotel rooms.
