According to information from the Public Security Police Force and Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Macau welcomed a total of 451,047 visitors during this year’s Chinese New Year Golden Week from 21 to 27 January, with a daily average of 64,435 visitors.

This represented a 297% increase over the same period in 2022 and was 37.5% of the 2.21 million visitors during Golden Week 2019.

CNY was the first holiday in more than three years without border restrictions limiting visitation from mainland China and Hong Kong after authorities reopened to the world on 8 January.

The resulting uptick included 264,662 arrivals from the mainland, up 150% year-on-year, and 164,672 from Hong Kong, up 2,600%.

Visitation peaked at 90,391 on Tuesday 24 January but remained strong throughout, culminating with 63,747 visitors on Friday 27 January.

The improved visitation also saw hotel occupancy rates soar to 85.7%, up 22.4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. The highest occupancy rate was recorded on the fourth day of Chinese New Year at 92.1%.

The average room rate of Macau hotel establishments was MOP$1,575, an increase of nearly 50% compared to CNY 2022.

The MGTO said, “The satisfactory tourism figures over the Spring Festival Golden Week mirrors visitors’ high intentions to travel to Macau during Chinese New Year and opt for a first-hand experience of the city’s glamour in “tourism +”. The bustling scene reflects a positive outlook for the tourism and related industries.”

In collaboration with Macau’s six concessionaires, the MGTO organized a number of New Year activities this year, including float parades and fireworks displays.
