Macau visitors increase average spend by 23% in 4Q17

          – Spending by Macau visitors grew 23% year-on-year in 4Q17
          – Mainland Chinese visitors spent an average of MOP$2,417
          – 47.7% of visitor spend was on shopping
          – Total 2017 per-capita spend grew 10.5% to MOP$1,880

Visitors to Macau increased their spending by 23% year-on-year and 14.2% sequentially in 4Q17 to MOP$18.19 billion, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP$14.78 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP$3.41 billion) rose by 22.9% and 23.1% respectively year-on-year, boosting the spending of visitors for all of 2017 to MOP$61.32 billion – an increase of 16.4% on 2016 spending.

Per capita spending in 4Q17 rose 13.2% to MOP$2,072, with visitors from mainland China averaging the most at MOP$2,417. Those from Guangdong Province (MOP$2,083) and Fujian Province (MOP$1,725) increased their average spend by 13.3% and 8.1% respectively. Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) spent an average of MOP$2,817, up 15.9%.

Per-capita spending of visitors from Japan (MOP$1,929), Singapore (MOP$1,895) and Malaysia (MOP$1,809) grew by 15.7%, 3.2% and 4.7% respectively year-on-year.

Per-capita spending of overnight visitors grew by 14.4% year-on-year to MOP$3,200. Overnight visitors from Mainland China spent an average of MOP$3,608 (+10.6%) with IVS visitors spending MOP$4,220, an increase of 15.6%.

Much of the visitor spend was on shopping, which comprised 47.7% of the total, while accommodation comprised 24.4% and food and beverage 20.2% of spend in 4Q17. Per-capita shopping spend was up 22% year-on-year to MOP$990, with spending on cosmetics and perfume (MOP$287) and local food products (MOP$279) surging by 54.2% and 20.3% respectively.

Notably, those in Macau for MICE events averaged MOP$3,531 of spend while those on vacation averaged MOP$2,884.

For the whole year of 2017, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP$1,880, up by 10.5% from MOP$1,701 in 2016, with per-capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP$2,883) and same-day visitors (MOP$754) growing by 7.6% and 8.7% respectively.

Visitors from mainland China spent an average of MOP$2,203, an increase of 11.6% on 2016 spending.
