MGM China’s Chairperson and Executive Director Pansy Ho Chiu King has won a permanent injunction against a woman who was found to have repeatedly harassed her and her companies over the course of a year.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports that the High Court handed down a judgement earlier this week that found the woman, Steffi Chen Pan-yu, had harassed Ho with emails and hand-delivered letters falsely alleging that she had been promised a senior executive position with MGM China.
Chen, who has been barred from contacting Ho and ordered to pay her HK$1.8 million (US$229,500) in compensation, is said to have delivered letters to the Hong Kong offices of MGM China and Shun Tak Holdings – of which Ho is also Group Executive Chairman and Managing Director – as well as to the home of her late sister Maisy Ho threatening to go public if she did not deliver on her alleged promise.
The SCMP report also states that Chen instructed her law firm to send a letter of demand seeking HK$21.26 million for consultancy services and work that had not been provided.
Ho ultimately applied to the High Court for an injunction against Chen in March, with Deputy High Court Judge Grace Chow Chiu-man ultimately determining this week that Chen had failed to provide any written evidence in support of her defence. Conversely, the judge found that Ho had provided sufficient evidence of harassment.
“I am further satisfied that based on the matters pleaded, the plaintiff is entitled to the injunctive relief sought,” the judge said, as per the SCMP report.
“The defendant has showed a propensity to repeatedly attempt to contact the plaintiff and her family and business associates to make false allegations against the plaintiff, which is causing ongoing distress and harm to the plaintiff.”
