South Korea’s Kangwon Land has nominated former Capital Defense Commander Kim Do-gyun as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to approval by the country’s President.
This follows recent reports that the company, which runs the only casino in South Korea at which locals are permitted to gamble, was interviewing candidates with a view to filling a position that had remained vacant for well over two years.
Kim’s nomination, as well as the selection of Kwon Soon-hyung and Yu Jeong-bae as candidates to become Executive Vice President, were approved by the company’s Board of Directors earlier this week.
Kim, 61, most recently served as Commander for the Republic of Korea Army’s Capital Defense Command. He was previously Director General for the North Korea Policy Office at the Ministry of National Defense, and Secretary to the President for National Defense Reform at the Office of National Security.
Kim will, if approved, become Kangwon Land’s first permanent CEO since Lee Sam-Geol stepped down in December 2023, with the company having appointed place a series of Interim CEOs instead. In March of this year, Nam Han-gyu was named as the company’s latest Interim CEO following the resignation of Choi Cheol-gyu. It is now 30 months since Lee’s departure.
For a permanent CEO to be appointed, a candidate must first be selected by the Kangwon Land board, after which the candidate must be reviewed and approved by the Public Institution Management Committee of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, given the green light at a shareholders meeting, officially nominated by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy and, finally, appointed by the President.
