The latest national lottery sales data released by China’s Ministry of Finance shows that, driven by this year’s FIFA World Cup, sports betting lottery sales surged dramatically in June, boosting total national lottery sales to 39.5% year-on-year growth.

The data indicates that national lottery sales in June reached RMB76.0 billion (US$11.3 billion), an increase of RMB21.5 billion (US$3.2 billion) compared to the same period last year. The growth momentum mainly stemmed from the sports betting lottery market boosted by World Cup fever.

Looking at the sales structure by agency, performance between the two main lottery agencies diverged significantly: the Welfare Lottery’s single-month sales reached RMB16.8 billion (US$249 million), down by 7.6% year-on-year; while the Sports Lottery soared with single-month sales hitting RMB59.2 billion (US$8.77 billion), a year-on-year increase of 62.9%. As such, the Sports Lottery served as the core driver pushing overall lottery market growth.

Cumulative data from January to June shows steady overall growth in the national lottery market, with first-half cumulative sales reaching RMB326.9 billion (US$48.4 billion), up 2.8% year-on-year.

During this six-month period, the Welfare Lottery had cumulative sales of RMB100.1 billion (US$14.8 billion), down 6.6% year-on-year, while the Sports Lottery achieved cumulative sales of RMB226.8 billion (US$33.6 billion, up 7.6% year-on-year and outperforming the overall market growth rate.
