Macau’s gross gaming revenue is estimated to have averaged MOP$621 million (US$76.9 million) over the past week – a slight 5% improvement over the first five days of July in what Citigroup analysts are attributing to fewer World Cup matches as the tournament nears its conclusion.
GGR had averaged MOP$590 million (US$73.0 million) per day at the start of the month according to industry sources, with revenue for the first 12 days of July combined said to be around MOP$7.3 billion (US$903 million).
In a note, Citi’s George Choi and Timothy Chau observed that there were only eight matches contested during the past seven days as opposed to three or four each day during the group stages. The early cluster had seen Macau industry GGR fall 12.1% year-on-year to MOP$18.5 billion (US$2.29 billion) in June.
However, the analysts said they expect steady improvement in the weeks ahead.
“As there are only four soccer matches remaining in the tournament, we expect Macau GGR to continue to recover,” Choi and Chau said.
“Post-tournament, Macau’s star-studded event calendar should swiftly help Macau GGR return to normal. We keep our July 2026 GGR forecast of MOP21.0 billion (down 5% year-on-year) unchanged for now, implying GGR to average -MOP$721 million (US$89.2 million) per day for the rest of July.”
