Dr Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd, has personally donated HK$ 200,000 (US$25,500) to Anima Macau – the Society for the Protection of Animals – to help it weather a debt crisis.
Anima Macau said in a statement, “Dr Wong recently donated a total of HK$200,000 to our association. This charitable fund will be fully allocated to the operating expenses of our animal shelter and will be used for necessary expenditures such as daily meals, medical care and environmental maintenance for the over 700 sheltered animals.
“Dr Wong’s generous support is not only an affirmation of our association’s animal protection work over the years, but also fully demonstrates his care for animal welfare and life dignity, providing substantial help to countless animals waiting for rescue in difficult situations.”
Anima made it clear that the donation was a personal contribution from Dr Wong to the association, injecting significant momentum into Anima’s continuous efforts to protect life.
“The association will make good use of this donation to continuously advance the protection of stray animals in Macau, living up to every trust and commitment,” it said.
Anima publicly appealed for donations in the middle of last month due to debts of close to MOP$1.2 million (US$148,500), describing the situation as having reached “dire straits and a precarious state.”
The association noted at the time that it currently shelters about 300 cats, 350 dogs, 50 turtles and a small number of other types of animals. “To maintain the daily operations for so many lives – including feeding, cleaning and basic care – is already an immense challenge in itself,” Anima said.
Anima charity indicated on 21 June that it has since raised a total of MOP$400,404 (US$49,560) in donations.
