The Macao SAR Government has appointed Tai Kin Ip, the former Secretary for Economy and Finance, as a board director of Macau International Airport Co Ltd (CAM) for a three-year term.
This appointment follows the government’s shock announcement on 16 April that Tai had resigned as Secretary for Economy and Finance due to personal reasons. This made him the first Secretary for Economy and Finance to resign during their term since Macau’s handover in 1999.
The position of Secretary for Economy and Finance remains vacant to this day.
Macau’s Official Gazette published an executive order on Wednesday 3 June stating that Tai has been appointed as a board director of CAM and will concurrently serve as a member of the Executive Committee. Former Sports Bureau Director Pun Weng Kun has also been appointed to the board.
According to data published by the government, the annual remuneration for a board director of CAM is MOP$1,754,720 (US$217,385) with an average monthly salary of MOP$146,000 (US$18,090). This is lower than a Secretary’s monthly salary of MOP$187,309 (US$23,205).
Tai took office as the Secretary for Economy and Finance on 20 December 2024, becoming one of the most important officials in the Macau SAR. Prior to this, he served as the Director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau.
However, his assumption of office coincided with the expiration of the three-year transition period for Macau’s satellite casinos. Apart from L’Arc Casino, which was acquired by SJM Holdings in December, all other satellite casinos have now ceased operations.
