The Home Minister of Bangladesh has announced plans to replace the country’s Gambling Act of 1867 with a new law to tighten the existing ban on gambling, betting and online gambling.
According to state-owned BSS News, Salahuddin Ahmed revealed the initiative while speaking at the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) in Bangladesh Secretariat.
In his speech, the minister described a rise in online gambling as a “major threat” to Bangladesh’s economy, social stability and youth. As such, it is time to introduce an updated legal framework that is more suited to the current time and enabled by technology.
“The drafting process of the new law is in its final stage and the bill will be placed in the next session of parliament for passage,” Salahuddin said.
Gambling in most forms is banned in Bangladesh with the exception of wagering on some horse racing government-approve lotteries.
