South Korea’s National Gambling Control Commission has appointed a new chairman, with Choi Byung-hwan inaugurated at a special ceremony this week.
Choi, one of 11 members of the Commission appointed by the Prime Minister, will serve a term of three years through to 20 April 2029, according to information on the Commission’s Official website.
The Commission’s 10th chairman is described as a “policy expert” who previously served as First Vice Minister of State for the Office for Government Policy Coordination. He was also a private member of the Presidential Commission on Regulatory Reform and the Presidential Secretariat’s National Agenda Secretary, among other roles.
Choi is expected to contribute to the integrated management and sound development of Korea’s gambling industries based on his “extensive administrative experience and policy coordination capabilities.”
In his inaugural address, Choi said, “We will actively work to establish a user protection system that safeguards the public from the side effects of the specified addictive industries and ensure their sound growth.”
Among the refreshed Commission’s main priorities will be the “sound development” of the industry, the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction and the eradication of illegal gambling.
