MGM China has outlined its belief that quality rather than quantity is the key to maintaining market share in Macau, adding that it will soon start the renovation of around 100 suites at its peninsula property MGM MACAU to reflect recent enhancements at the company’s Cotai resort.
CEO Kenneth Feng detailed MGM China’s latest initiatives in the premium mass gaming space during parent company MGM Resorts International’s 1Q26 earnings call this morning, explaining the MGM view that gaining market share in Macau is not about supply but about providing an elite product targeted to latest customer trends.
This followed comments from MGM Resorts CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle that MGM China is still “under-suited” even with its substantial market share gains post-COVID.
“The Macau market is a premium-driven market but it’s not simply about supply. It’s not purely about quantity. It’s more about quality,” Feng said. “It’s about understanding the market to serve the purpose of the target guests.
“Here at MGM China, we are very focused on our products and services. We want to make sure they are meaningful, effective and targeted to the premium customers.”
Feng confirmed that MGM China last week opened new premium mass suites at MGM COTAI, which he described as “unique, different, refreshing and cozy” and a product never before seen in the Greater China area.
Also launched alongside those suites and ahead of the upcoming May Day Golden Week holiday period was 40,000 feet of premium gaming space featuring 40 tables and 15 private rooms.
Explaining that the new product has been exceptionally well received by customers, Feng revealed that the company is now “in the design stage for 100 [renovated] suites at MGM MACAU and also some gaming spaces and F&B outlets.
“We want to spend money wisely to serve the purposes of the customers in Macau,” he continued. “They are not the typical hospitality products or resort products, they are serving the targeted premium guests.”
Feng added that MGM has developed a “pretty unique corporate culture here that encourages everyone – from myself to all other senior management members to our team members – to react fast and effectively in making changes, in developing products and services that reflect the fast changing customer tastes.
“Reinvestment, capex, product, service are all in one package which is about how we take care of customers. That is the key for us continuing to grow for the rest of this year and into next year.”
MGM revealed during the earnings call that although its Macau market share had slipped to 15.4% for the quarter, share had risen to 17.3% in March and maintained at that level through April.
