China’s nine-day Chinese New Year “Golden Week” concluded on Monday. Based on preliminary data released by the authorities, Macau recorded approximately 1.55 million visitor arrivals over the holiday period, averaging about 172,000 visitors per day.
According to information from the Public Security Police Force, on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year and ninth of the holiday period, Macau’s border checkpoints recorded more than 675,000 inbound and outbound crossings. Visitor crossings totaled 318,000, including around 157,000 inbound visitors.
Since mainland China began its Chinese New Year holiday on 15 February, the total number of visitors to Macau over the nine days has reached about 1.55 million.
Last year, the Chinese New Year “Golden Week” lasted only eight days. During that period, Macau recorded nearly 1.31 million inbound visitors in total, with a daily average of nearly 164,000. Based on provisional calculations from the temporary data, this year’s average daily visitor number increased by about 5.5%.
Macau saw its peak day for inbound arrivals during this Golden Week last Thursday – the third day of the CNY – when 227,943 visitors entered Macau in a single day. This also set a new record for the highest number of inbound visitors in one day in Macau’s history.
Police also announced that, including the day before Golden Week on 14 February, Macau recorded more than 6.695 million inbound and outbound crossings across all border checkpoints over the past 10 days. Visitor crossings totaled 3.39 million, including 1.7 million inbound visitors.
