Las Vegas Sands Corp is branding its latest Macau project as ‘Sands Cotai Central’.
Until now the US$4.2 billion scheme across the road from The Venetian Macao—has been known in the industry simply by its Cotai land plot numbers; ‘Cotai 5 and 6’.
The opening date for Sands Cotai Central has had to be amended several times. The first delays were because work was halted due to liquidity problems experienced by LVS during the global financial crisis that began in late 2008. The second set of delays were because of Macau’s labour shortage. LVS is currently saying it expects the first phase of the project to open “early next spring”.
Sands Cotai Central is expected to have more than 6,000 hotel rooms when it’s finally completed. In its first phase it will have around 400 gaming tables—the exact number of tables being subject to Macau government approval. That’s because until the beginning of 2013 the government has placed a 5,500-table cap on the size of the market.
