The Director of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, says she expects China’s National Day Golden Week holiday to be the next peak period for Macau tourist arrivals, with an average of 100,000 visitors per day forecast.
Golden Week in mainland China will last for seven days from 1 to 7 October, After the Spring Festival Golden Week and the May Day Golden Week, the Macau travel trade regards the National Day Golden Week as the third most important period for tourism annually.
Speaking with local media on Sunday, Senna Fernandes said, “This year’s National Day Golden Week will be marked by an international fireworks display, which is expected to attract more tourists to Macau.
“Although the government has not yet compiled the statistics, we hope that the National Day Golden Week will attract a daily average of 100,000 visitors to Macau.”
According to the government’s provisional figures, there were 3.66 million visitor arrivals in August, an increase of about 13% over the same period last year. Senna Fernandes said the number of visitors arriving in Macau during the summer holidays was “very encouraging” with a daily average of 118,000 arrivals in August even higher than the 117,000 arrivals during the same period in 2019.
The MGTO’s data shows Macau welcoming nearly 6.685 million visitor arrivals during this year’s summer holiday months of July and August, with a combined daily average of 108,000 arrivals.
During last year’s National Day Golden Week, which lasted for eight days from 29 September to 6 October, Macau recorded a total of 931,000 visitor arrivals, with a daily average of about 116,000 visitors. The travel industry expects this year’s figure to exceed last year’s, suggesting the MGTO’s forecast may be on the safe side.
