A month-long anti-gambling taskforce that ran throughout the Euro 2024 football championships saw 3,863 suspects arrested and more than 200 websites shut down, Thai police said Sunday.
Releasing data from the crackdown, which officially came to an end ahead of this morning’s final between Spain and England, police confirmed that 224 local gambling websites were shut down with 846 suspects arrested in connection with them, including 145 believed to have operated them and 701 gamblers. These websites saw more than TBH2.4 billion (US$66.4 million) in circulation, according to The Bangkok Post.
Pol Lt Gen Akradet Pimolsri, Thailand’s assistant national police chief, added that of the total 3,863 people arrested, 3,017 were caught at gambling dens, including 50 alleged bookies and 2,944 alleged gamblers.
Spain were this morning crowned Euro 2024 champions after overcoming England 2-1 in a pulsating final played in Berlin, Germany.
