The Macau Environmental Protection Bureau announced Tuesday the successful recipients of the 2022 Green Hotel Awards, with 27 Macau hotels receiving an award, of which nine received the highest distinction of a Gold Award. All nine are linked to integrated resorts.
The Green Hotel Awards are designed to help Macau achieve its vision of “Building a Low Carbon Macao, Creating Green Living Together” and to encourage hotels and guesthouses to continuously adopt green measures. The awards are divided into various categories with Gold being the highest followed by Silver, Bronze, Merit, Green Guesthouse and Basic Certificates.
The nine hotels to receive a Gold Award were Sands China’s Conrad, The Londoner, Sheraton and St. Regis; MGM; Melco’s Studio City; and Ritz-Carlton, Banyan Tree and JW Marriott at Galaxy Macau.
The Macau Green Hotel Award is valid for three years, with 54 hotels currently holding awards. The award-winning hotels continue to provide electric vehicle charging facilities, with over 200 electric vehicle charging facilities currently in place, an increase of nearly 50% compared to 2021.
In addition, 40% of the award-winning hotels are using electric vehicles and 20% using natural gas vehicles. The cumulative food waste recycling capacity of the 54 award-winning hotels exceeded 9,700 tonnes, equivalent to the weight of 2,425 minibuses, the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau said.
