The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has signed a three-year strategic partnership agreement with Tencent’s WeChat Pay – also known as Weixin Pay – aimed at promoting Singapore as a destination of choice for Chinese tourists by significantly expanding digital payment options.

The agreement was signed in Shanghai on Friday where it was revealed that the STB and WeChat Pay would look to leverage the Weixin ecosystem to promote the digital transformation of various industries in Singapore.

There will also be a concerted effort to attract Chinese tourists over the coming months via special deals at a range of major Singapore attractions including Sentosa Island – home to Resorts World Sentosa – Jewel Changi Airport, CapitaLand malls and Mandai Wildlife Reserve. The deals will begin this upcoming 1 May 2023 “May Day” holiday and run through until China’s National Day on 1 October 2023.

“We look forward to the return of Chinese tourists, for whom Weixin Pay is a popular digital tool, and we hope this strategic partnership will enable tourists to enjoy even more lifestyle experiences in Singapore,” said Andrew Phua, Executive Director of Singapore Tourism Board for Greater China. Phua added that Singapore merchants could leverage the WeChat Pay ecosystem to further upgrade their digital capabilities and better serve Chinese consumers.

Freedom Li, President of Weixin Pay International Business, said, “In the past, we have collaborated with the STB to promote the popularity and development of digital payment. We will work together further to provide digital solutions based on the Weixin ecosystem to create high-quality cross-border smart travel experiences for Chinese tourists.”
