India’s COVID crisis has been felt by leading gaming company Delta Corp, which reported a loss of Rs 28.93 crore (US$3.9 million) for the three months to 30 June 2021.

The 2Q21 result is almost identical to the Rs28.24 (US$3.8 million) crore loss reported in the same period last year during India’s first wave of COVID-19 but represents a significant decline from a profit of Rs 57.77 crore (US$7.7 million) recorded in 1Q21 following the reopening of Delta Corp’s Goa casinos.

Those casinos, along with Casino Deltin Denzong at the Denzong Regency Hotel in Gangtok, Sikkim, were forced to close again in April as COVID cases across India surged. Sikkim casinos were granted permission to reopen last week.

According to Delta Corp’s Q2 results announcement, income from casino operations, including its three offshore casinos and the Deltin Suites hotel and casino in Goa, reached Rs 41.43 crore (US$5.5 million), down from Rs 211.87 crore (US$28.3 million) in Q1.

Income from online gaming, comprising its popular poker and rummy site Adda52, was Rs 43.28 crore (US$5.8 million), down from Rs 57.07 crore (US$7.6 million) in 2Q20 but slightly better than the March 2021 quarter.

The company announced Monday that the government of Goa has again extended restrictions with casinos to remain closed until at least 19 July.
