Once the domain of the land-based casino industry, online gaming operators have upped their game in recent years and are now offering player incentives as lucrative as anything out there in the land-based space.

While the appeal of land-based versus online remains very much an individual preference – some people revel in the buzz of playing at a live gaming table while others prefer the quiet comfort of their own home – there is no doubt the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how acquisition opportunities differ between the segments.

Land-based casinos have traditionally enticed players with a variety of comps, from basic player loyalty rewards such as casino dollars to free meals, free accommodation, show tickets and even free flights for their better customers. There are also all sorts of cash and prize giveaways on a weekly or monthly basis for those on property at the time.

Online casinos don’t have the same opportunities to offer comps and so industry vendors have started turning their attention to larger cash prizes with some huge offers seen across the industry since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microgaming, for example, is offering a US$155,000 monthly prize to one lucky player each month for six months while BNG recently offered a weekly US$6,250.

Pragmatic Play has gone one step further, however, by announcing it will give away US$3 million to players as part of its Drops & Wins promo, running from February to November 2021. Players qualify simply by playing Pragmatic Play games and making qualifying bets. Once they have qualified for the Drops & Wins promo, players must achieve the highest single spin win amount, adjusted to bet value, with the higher the multiplier (win/stake), the higher the score. Prize drops are rewarded randomly to players.

It is via this sort of attractive player reward offering that today’s leading iGaming developers and operators are attracting a new breed of players looking for something a little different.
