Suncity Group Holdings Japan held its second talk session with the Japanese representative team of the Sailing World Grand Prix (SailGP) on Tuesday at Suncity’s Wakayama Office.
Japan SailGP team COO Kazuhiko Sofuku spoke at the event, which is part of Suncity’s efforts to contribute to regional vitalization. The theme of the lecture was, “Creating a sustainable tourism industry through Wakayama, sailing mecca.”
Sofuku, considered to be something of a pioneer in the yachting world, stated, “Sail GP is also committed to a Wakayama IR bid. I believe Wakayama has the best environment to start this off.”
Kazuya Nakamura, chairman of the non-profit Wakayama Sailing Club said, “If Wakayama can become one of Asia’s anchor points for world-class athletes, hopefully we’ll be able to host more tournaments besides SailGP, and contribute to the economy in some way.
Suncity Group is currently taking part in Wakayama’s RFP process with its “Wakayama IR 2.0” concept. It is thought that co-development of the whole region, which will be prompted by the IR project, is vital for the future of Wakayama and protecting the values of the area.
In October last year, Suncity signed a youth academy official partner contract with the Japan Sail GP Team, and co-sponsored the youth training academy at the Wakayama Sailing Center (Marina City) and the marine conservation lecture group.
