Macau’s Tourist Price Index (TPI) – an indicator of price changes for goods and services purchased by visitors – rose by 2.78% year-on-year to 129.86 in the three months to 30 June 2018, according to latest information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The TPI increase has been attributed primarily to the rising cost of hotel accommodation, restaurants, transportation and local food products. In particular, the price indices of the Accommodation sector increased 7.05%, Transport and Communications 6.30% and Alcohol and Tobacco 4.25%.
However, the TPI fell 5.17% sequentially with Accommodation down 22.60% and Transport and Communications down 3.51% on 1Q18 levels due to lower hotel room rates and airfares after the Lunar New Year.
The average TPI for the last four quarters represented a 4.21% increase from the previous period, with notable increases in the price indices of Accommodation (14.12%) and Transport and Communications (4.87%).
For the first half of 2018, TPI went up by 4.48% year-on-year, with price indices of Accommodation and Transport and Communications rising by 13.64% and 6.44% respectively.
