Melco Resorts is yet to officially announce an opening date for its new luxury hotel tower Morpheus, but if the new Count:Down Clock unveiled at City of Dreams this week is accurate then mark down 10 May 2018 in the diary.
The clock, designed by award-winning designer Maarten Baas, is not only a striking piece of art but is also intended to count down the hours and minutes to the opening of Morpheus, scheduled for 2Q18. And counting down it is, with the clock showing 5,436 hours to go when Inside Asian Gaming was invited to behold its splendor on Tuesday.
Implementing complex mathematical formulas to this number – also known as simple arithmetic – it seems that the Count:Down Clock will reach zero on 10 May, signalling both the opening of Morpheus and the launch of City of Dreams Phase 3.
This also falls perfectly into the scheduled second quarter launch that Melco has previously indicated, even if the company are yet to announce anything more specific at this stage.
Time will tell, literally, if this is indeed the opening date.
In the meantime, the Count:Down Clock is intriguing in its own right with Baas and his production team having filmed six actors in real time as they carefully painted and then wiped away the numbers denoting all the hours and minutes in a day on a hazy, etched glass face.
The filming took 10 days to complete but the result is that every number is unique.
The art piece is the latest edition in Baas’ acclaimed “Real Time” series – a collection of 12-hour films in which actors indicate the time minute by minute. For the Count:Down Clock, Baas dressed the actors in black tie to create a more stylish aesthetic.
“I wanted it to look more luxurious, as if they’re giving you a personal VIP service,” he said. “They are the ones who you can rely on.”
