Philippine gaming regulator Pagcor has sensationally suspended Resorts World Manila’s (RWM) gaming license following the tragic attack that saw 38 people lose their lives on 2 June.
In a statement released on Friday, Pagcor cited serious lapses in security that allowed lone gunman Jessie Carlos to enter the property with little intervention.
“In light of the tragic incident that happened in Resorts World Manila last June 2, 2017 – which resulted in 38 fatalities, including the assailant and 54 individuals injured, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation suspends the Provisional License granted to Travellers International Hotel Group to operate casinos and other gaming facilities under the business name of RWM,” it said.
“With the suspension, RWM must cease and desist all gaming operations while investigation on its liability regarding the June 2 incident is on-going. The said suspension will remain until RWM rectifies its serious security lapses and deficiencies – which caused not only the loss of lives and damaged properties – but also placed the Philippine gaming, tourism and hospitality industries in a bad light.
“Non-compliance with the order shall cause Pagcor to impose other sanctions as may be warranted under existing laws. Pagcor is also requiring all integrated resorts to submit security and safety protocols to make sure that this will not happen again.
“As the country’s gaming regulator, Pagcor will continue to safeguard the interest not only of all gaming industry players but also, of all guests, tourists and other stakeholders involved.”
Pagcor had previously admitted frustration at delays in accessing the site to conduct investigations following the attack. RWM’s license suspension was immediate as of Friday.
